2018 Marucci F5 Review | New Bats, Same Barrels

2018 Marucci F5 Review

Marucci came out with a new bat for 2018. It is the first performance bat they've released that serves the entry level arena. That is, a sub $199 bat that's meant to meet the performance standard across a good sized barrel. The barrel is comparable to the 2018 CAT 7 in that it uses variable wall thickness to push the aluminum structure to its limits. But it lacks the anti-vibration knob and the numerous sizing options the CAT 7 offers. We hit with the BBCOR and big barrel versions of the F5 and write our 2018 Marucci F5 review below.

Marucci F5 Recommendations

If you love the Marucci line of bats and like the feel of a single piece aluminum bat then the F5 is a legit option for players not ready to spend the money it takes to acquire a CAT 7. Do note, however, the F5 only comes in a drop 10 2 3/4 for both Junior Big Barrel and Big Barrel Leagues as well as a BBCOR option. In other words, even if you do want this bat its possible they won't make it in your size. So, check before you start to salivate.

Why You Might Like

  • Value Purchase.
  • Big Barrel for an aluminum bat
  • Light Swing
  • Loud Ping
  • Durability

Why You Might Not Like

  • Hand Ring on mishits
  • Not the biggest barrel
  • Lots of other options in the single piece aluminum space

What's Behind the Marucci F5?

Variable Wall Thickness

In the simplist of terms, the Marucci F5 is a dumbed down version of the Marucci CAT 7. It has the exact same barrel but does not use the same anti-vibration knob that many appriciate in the CAT series of bats. The barrel uses variable wall thickness that removes weight from the swing and allows for better performance across the length of the barrel. This technique is used in the CAT 7 (and many top shelf single piece aluminum bats).

What is an F5?

The F_ nomenclature is how fires are categorized. That is, an F1 is a less intense fire than an F5. The F5 is a shout out to the idea of something that is very hot and dangerous. Fitting. It is probably worth noting here that the the CAT 7, Marucci's flagship bat, is named after the categorization of hurricane intensity.

Where to Buy the Marucci F5?

2018 Marucci F5 Review

Marucci's F5 will be available in the major outlets. We would check there first. But, as always, check on places like Marucci's site directly. Our favorite place to look for bat prices is directly on Amazon and, occassionally, eBay. Many of the major retailers have stores on these platforms and you can leverage your comfort-ability with Amazon and Prime shipping.

2018 Marucci F5 In Depth Review

518 vs 517 Omaha Construction

2018 Marucci F5 Review

As we mention above, the 2018 Marucci F5 is made from a single piece of aluminum. This aluminum has added materials within the metal so you will often see it referred to as an alloy bat.

The most unique feature of the F5 is something you can only see if you cut the bat in half lengthwise. The barrel's differing thickness allows for better trampoline effect off the dead sweet spot. It also removes volume from the barrel and allows for a lighter swinging bat.

The F5 is one of the lightest swinging single piece bats on the market. And, at this price point, we think it is the lightest.

2017 Mizuno Generations Review

There are several single piece aluminum bats on the market. Not counting the Marucci F5, four bats use variable wall thickness to lower the swing weight. They are:

Each of these bats are "hot out of the wrapper". None, save the Mizuno Generations, however, are as inexpensive as the F5. If you'd like to read more about those bats we refer you to those specific reviews for details.

(Thanks goes out to one of our faithful readers for making sure we got the Generations on this list. It is, far and away, the most comparable bat to the F5 in the market today.)

Marucci F5 Sizing

The F5 will only come in 3 model sizes this year:

  • BBCOR 29 to 34 inch
  • Big Barrel Drop 10 (2 3/4)
  • Junior Big Barrel Drop 10 (2 3/4)
