2018 Marucci F5 Review

2018 Marucci F5 Review | New Bats, Same Barrels

Marucci came out with a new bat for 2018. It is the first performance bat they’ve released that serves the entry level arena—that is, a sub $199 bat that’s meant to meet the performance standard across a good sized barrel. The barrel is comparable to the 2018 CAT 7 in that it uses variable wall thickness to push the aluminum structure to its limits. But it lacks the anti-vibration knob and numerous sizing options the CAT 7 offers. We hit with the BBCOR and big barrel versions of the F5 and write our 2018 Marucci F5 review below.

If you love the Marucci line of bats and like the feel of a single piece aluminum bat, then the F5 is a legit option for players not ready to spend the money it takes to acquire a CAT 7. Quick Review

If you love the Marucci line of bats and like the feel of a single piece aluminum bat, then the F5 is a legit option for players not ready to spend the money it takes to acquire a CAT 7. Do note, however, the F5 only comes in a drop 10 2 3/4 for both Junior Big Barrel and Big Barrel Leagues, as well as a BBCOR option. In other words, even if you do want this bat it is possible they won’t make it in your size. Check before you start to salivate.

2018 Marucci F5 Review

The F_ nomenclature is how fires are categorized. That is, an F1 is a less intense fire than an F5. The F5 is a shout out to the idea of something that is very hot and dangerous. Fitting. It is probably worth noting here that the the CAT 7, Marucci’s flagship bat, is named after the categorization of hurricane intensity.

2018 Marucci F5 Review

The USSSA version of the F5 is dynamite. People love the bat, it feels a lot like the CATMarucci releases their baseball bats on 2 year cycles. That is, don’t expect a 2019 F5, but instead, a 2020 F5. Although they may very well call it the F6, but we have no idea.

2018 vs 2015 F5

2015 was the first year of the F5. This year has some slight upgrades, but it is the same bat and feel. They did upgrade some of it to a black version for 2020, but it is the same bat with some different graphics that comply with the new NCAA regulation on non-white bats.

Comparable Bats

Marucci F5 Comparable Bats

There are several single piece aluminum bats on the market. Not counting the Marucci F5, four bats use variable wall thickness to lower the swing weight. They are:

Rawlings VELO
Boombah Cannon
Axe Hyperwhip
Marucci CAT 7
Mizuno Generations

(Thanks goes out to one of our faithful readers for making sure we got the Generations on this list. It is far and away the most comparable bat to the F5 in the market today.)

Each of these bats are “hot out of the wrapper”. None, save the Mizuno Generations, however, is as inexpensive as the F5. If you’d like to read more about those bats we refer you to those specific reviews for details.

2020 CAT 8

Compare the CAT 8 Review

We are bombarded with questions about the release date of the Marucci CAT 9.  But, the 2020 Marucci Cat line in BBCOR is the CAT 8 Black. They only release every other year. This year, they updated the color scheme on a few of their bats due to the new white bat NCAA ban.

For the heretofore unknown Marucci CAT 9 (if that is even what it will be called) we have no expectation for that release for until the summer of 2020. But, that is just our guess based on their previous release of the CAT 8 and CAT 7 in years passed. They are capable of surprising all of us. You will note, the 2020 USA CAT bat is called, just that, the 2020 Marucci CAT USA.

2020 Louisville Slugger Omaha Review: Value. Value. Value. After hitting with every version of the 2020 Slugger Omaha, we are confident it will continue to dominate the value purchase realm of all baseball. It serves as a legit option for novice and expert alike in the BBCOR, USSSA and USA space with a reasonable price point most parents are willing to pay. Our favorite, if we had to choose, is the drop 5 USA Omaha. With the exception of the 33 and 34-inch BBCOR, 2020 Omahas are built with a light swing in mind. Those two BBCOR versions are intentionally built for a heavy swing. Our Score 9.8/10 (BBCOR); 9.5/10(USSSA); 9.8/10 (USA).

Research: 2018 Marucci F5

2018 Marucci F5 Review | New Bats, Same Barrels

Marucci F5 vs CAT 8

In the simplest of terms, the Marucci F5 is a watered down version of the Marucci CAT 8. It has the exact same barrel but does not use the same anti-vibration knob that many appreciate in the CAT series of bats. The barrel uses variable wall thickness that removes weight from the swing and allows for better performance across the length of the barrel. This technique is used in the CAT 8 (and many top shelf single piece aluminum bats).

2018 F5 Construction

As we mention above, the 2018 Marucci F5 is made from a single piece of aluminum. This aluminum has added materials within the metal so you will often see it referred to as an alloy bat.

The most unique feature of the F5 is something you can only see if you cut the bat in half lengthwise. The barrel’s differing thickness allows for better trampoline effect off the dead sweet spot. It also removes volume from the barrel and allows for a lighter swinging bat.

The F5 is one of the lightest swinging single piece bats on the market. And at this price point, we think it is the lightest.
