2020 Axe Avenge Review

2020 Axe Avenge Review | Pro Handle

See the Awards the 2020 Avenge has Won!

We’ve been singing the praises of the Axe handle for 6 years now. It’s a great feel that, after a couple dozen swings, feels like old hat. We hit with the Axe Avenge in all its versions (USA, BBCOR, USSSA), measured its exit speeds and barrel sizes as well as the swing weights. In short, it matches well with other two piece composites in performance and relevant options in the space. Axe added a new verion of the handle in 2020 called the Pro Handle which our testers awarded the Innovative Bat of the YearTM for 2020.

Our hitters liked the feel. At first, a few newbies had trouble with the skinner feel on the top hand of the bat. Quick Review

Our hitters liked the feel. At first, a few newbies had trouble with the skinner feel on the top hand of the bat. That is, the bottom hand fits perfectly (espeically on the Pro Handle BBCOR versions) but the top feels small and thin. But, after a number of swings, players tend to like the feel. The connection piece is also recommendable and our smaller USA type hitters loved the feel over any other bat they swung.

Why the BBCOR Avenge Won Innovative Bat of Year – Gold Status

To say that Axe Bats has “just improved” bat design is like saying Thomas Edison improved candles. They didn’t just change an end cap or foam insert and call it a better bat. They thought beyond a round lathe. For 2020, Axe improves its ergonomic shaped handle on some BBCOR models to improve the grip for adult hands.  Building on feedback from several MLB guys who use Axe, they rounded the bottom hand to a better fit. It’s a subtle, but useful change. If you’ve never tried out an Axe bat, you have no excuses. If you have and didn’t quite like it, then do yourself a favor and check out the Pro Handle version. Combine that improvement with a barrel designed for direction, their storming of the Big League levels, and we think Axe is the most innovative BBCOR bat for 2020. Hence, the Innovative Bat of the YearTM Award.

Recommendations

The two piece composite space is replete with legitimate options in every league. BBCOR is dominated by bats like the Meta, Quatro and CF. USSSA is a CF playground and USA feels like the Quatro, CF and ADV are having their way. Yet, in all of that, the Axe Handled Avenge is a reasonable two piece option. For 2020 the USSSA Axe Avenge in a drop 10 is the lightest drop 10 you’ll find (in terms of swing weight). The USA Version sits in the bottom half of swing weight feels and the BBCOR is within 3% of the lightest swing. As such, if that’s the type of swing weight you want and you’re down for trying an axe handle on your high end two piece composite the 2020 Avenge is a great fit.

BBCOR Avenge Recommendations
2020 Axe Avenge Review

Last year the Axe Avenge in a 33 was the lightest swing weight we could find. This year, it was real close, but a couple (like the CF) beat it by a few percentage points. There is no functional difference between the swing weight of the lightest swinging bat on the BBCOR market (in 33) and the Axe Avenge. We HIGHLY recommend the Pro Handle version of the BBCOR bat. The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t come in a 31-inch (only the non Pro Handle comes in a 31). But, if you swing a 32 through 34 and are considering the BBCOR we’d bounce on the Pro Handle. It’s the Innovative Bat of the YearTM for 2020.

USA Avenge Recommendations
2020 Axe Avenge Review

The USA version of the 2020 Axe Avenge is a drop 10 bat called the Axe Avenge Comp. It comes in a 28 through 32 inch version has a middle of the road (balanced) swing weight and, from our lower swing speed testers, was rated the best feeling bat in the entire USA space. The USA bat space continues to figure out the new standard with a lot of movement in market share and a bat that feels the best is in a good place to make progress. There are likely less expensive options with better overall performance ratings—as the USA standard and composite bats don’t seem to mesh well so far. But, if a great feel is on the top of your list the USA Axe Avenge is a solid choice.

USSSA Avenge Recommendations
2020 Axe Avenge Review

We were surprised to find the USSSA version of the 2020 Axe Avenge the lightest swing in all the 2020 USSSA bats (which were all the ones we could find). As such a light bat it struggled a bit in our exit speed tests—thinking the lack of mass in the bat couldn’t generate the power that some more end loaded or balanced bats in the USSSA space could. That said, if bat speed is your thing and you’re looking for a high end two piece composite in a USSSA the Axe Avenge is a solid bet.

2020 vs 2019 Avenge

The biggest difference between the 2019 and 2020 versions of the Axe Avenge is the addition of the Pro Handle versions of the bat in BBCOR. We are hopeful the future holds some USA and USSSA versions too. That new handle increased the roundness on the bottom hand giving it a more ergonomic feel for bigger players. But, we found our smaller players preferred the more rounded handle than the traditional one too.

Bat Review

Avenge

We hit with the BBCOR version of the 2019 Axe Avenge. This two piece composite bat felt great on mishits and swung with a lighter swing weight than the previous year's version.

Comparable Bats

There are no other comparable bats to the Axe Avenge. Really. Sure, there are other two piece composite bats with big barrels and a nice feel. But the Axe handle is so distinctive claiming there is a similar experience just isn’t accurate. In the world of Axe Bats there are only two types of bats: Those who have axe handles and those who don’t.

2020 Quatro Pro

Compare the Quatro Pro Review

Our 2020 Rawlings Quatro Pro review consists of hitting with the USA, USSSA and BBCOR versions of the bat. Our hitters thought the USSSA and drop 10 USA versions are highly recommendable. The BBCOR version, one of our favorite BBCOR bats in previous years, fell short this year with its feel and performance lacking compared to the 2019 and 2018 versions. The Drop 12 USA version is terribly light, maybe too much so, and sounds broke–although it’s exit speeds were decent for a drop 12.

2020 CF

Compare the CF Review

The 2020 DeMarini CF review comes on the heels of hours of testing the BBCOR, USSSA and USA versions. Our testing gave the 2020 USSSA CF a near perfect rating (save the potential for durability issues). The USA version rated out well but, like all composite barrels in USA  bats, lacked great performance. BBCOR CF testing didn’t go so well and it’s the biggest disappointment of the bunch. We’re not sure what to think of that. We liked the 2019 version. Still, our BBCOR 2020 CF hitters and exit speeds were uninspired. Our Score 9.9/10 (USSSA); 9.0/10 (USA); 8/10 (BBCOR).

2020 Prime

Compare the Prime Review

Our 2020 Louisville Slugger Prime review consists of years of data collection for the Slugger Prime bats. The 2020 edition will be the 6th edition of the Prime. As expected, the 2020 version is a two piece composite bat built with a balanced swing weight, big barrel and comes in a number of sizes in the BBCOR, USA and USSSA space. There are virtually no changes in the construction of the bat from the 2019 versions.

Research: 2020 Axe Avenge

2020 Axe Avenge Review | Pro Handle

2020 Avenge Construction

The Axe Avenge is a two piece piece composite bat with an asymmetric handle and end cap. The orientation of the handle forces contact to only occur on one side of the barrel so Axe engineers design the barrel for that type of impact. We’ve found our Axe bats to be more durable than other two piece composite, but that evidence is anecdotal.

We’ve spent pages over the course of the last few years explaining the idea behind an axe shaped handle and how something more ergonomic can produce better exit speeds. We’ll refer you to previous version of our conversations as well as some Axe literature on that for now. Maybe for 2021 we’ll dive back into our diatribe on a the antiquity of round knobs on round bats from the early 1900’s. Until then, check here.

Bat Sizing Options

Axe comes with a reasonable amount of sizing. It’s non endloaded swing weight in every class make it a relevant choice for most hitters.

BBCOR: 31, 32, 33, 34-inch (note the Pro Handle does not come in a 31).

USSSA: 27, 28, 29, 30, 31-inch

USA: 28, 29, 30, 31-inch
