2020 DeMarini Voodoo One Review

Get the Right Size Bat

We have hit with every DeMarini Voodoo bat since 2015. Cage and game hitting as well as exit speeds and direct player feedback compromise this 2020 DeMarini Voodoo Review. The bat is considered a light swinging, entry level performance baseball bat in the single piece aluminum space. The Voodoo One, not to be confused with the hybrid Voodoo Balanced, comes in BBCOR, USA and USSSA. Players looking for a value deal or big and strong players that want a very light swing in an ultra stiff bat will like the 2020 DeMarini Voodoo One. The USA bat is a real bright spot, the BBCOR version is average and the USSSA bat is avoidable.

Quick Review

Generally, our hitters like the light swing of the Voodoo One. Parents like the light price point of the Voodoo One. In terms of a great feel very few say the Voodoo One has it. The barrel isn’t very big either. Still, despite its short comings, it makes up for it in a good size offering, legit performance if you square it up and an affordable price.

Recommendations

Generally, those who are very serious about youth competitive baseball won’t find the Voodoo very exciting. It’s hand ringing nature and smaller barrel aren’t things people praise in the dugout. On the other end of the spectrum, serious college players tend to prefer single piece bats with an endload. The 2020 Voodoo One is a single piece bat but it swings light. That said, there are some players in the NCAA who like its stiff feel and bat speed. As are there youth players and parents who like it sound, performance and price to make it their bat of choice. The most recommendable bat of the bunch is the drop 5 USA version which serves as a great cold weather bat or BP stick for the growing youth competitive player.

BBCOR Voodoo Recommendations
2020 DeMarini Voodoo Review

It is a single piece bat so you can expect some ring in the hands on mishits. As well, it swings light so you’ll get no help in the girth department for that hand ring you notice. If you are going this route we’d consider going an inch bigger than you’d usually do. A 32 inch BBCOR hitter might really benefit from the extra inch they can get without much swing increase on the 2020 Voodoo One.

USA Voodoo Recommendations
2020 DeMarini Voodoo Review

Of all the 2020 DeMarini Voodoo One bats the USA version is the most recommendable. It’s price point makes it more palatable and the reviews on aluminum barreled USA bats do quite good compared to their composite peers. As well, we expect when the USA Voodoo One clears out of inventory the prices will drop to very reasonable. This is a great entry level USA bat for a light swinging kid getting their feet wet with serious bats or a legit cold weather BP bat for a drop 10 player. We’d suggest you get a inch longer than you usually swing or, if you’re feeling crazy, go for your first drop 5.

USSSA Voodoo Recommendations
2020 DeMarini Voodoo Review

In short, people generally don’t tell their friends about this bat. It’s a straight forward aluminum single piece bat at an entry level price point that’s about twice as bats that get as good of rating. Think of a bat like the Axe Origin, a single piece bat at least comes with something to talk about. The Origin is half its price. The USSSA version is the least popular of the BBCOR or USA models. At its full price point we rarely think its worth the buy. When it goes on discount, though, that is a different story.

2020 vs 2018 Voodoo

Compared to the 2019 Voodoo One the only change is the change in end cap to a "ReACTION END CAP". In effect, the end cap is supposed to hone in the swing weight and help with some barrel performance. Our expectation is it won't change the on field or general sentiment at all when compared to the 2019. In other words, we would not buy a 2020 Voodoo One until you can no longer find the 2019 versions on discount.

Comparable Bats

There are several single piece aluminum bats on the market—not many have an MSRP of $249 for BBCOR. Some, like the CAT 8 and Velo price out well over that and, we think, rightfully so. Those bats have done a reamarkable job in the single piece space with a big barrel and strong swing. The most similar bat in terms of pricing and make up to the 2020 Voodoo One is the 2020 Slugger Omaha. However, when comparing user reviews, the Omaha, to put it mildly, wipes the floor in BBCOR, USA and USSSA.

2020 Omaha

Compare the Omaha Review

With the exception of a swing weight increase on the 33 and 34-inch BBCOR, the 2020 Louisville Slugger Omaha stays unchanged. That is a good thing.  We think the entry level hitter looking for a big barrel on a more reasonably priced bat will like it. As well, big hitters who want a stiff and durable bat will love it too—as many college players prove true. We have hit with the bat among several hitters, tracked exit speeds and measured its metrics. That data goes into this player generated 2020 Louisville Slugger Omaha review.

2020 Voodoo Construction

The barrel of the Voodoo One is the same material that makes up the very popular 2020 Voodoo. That bat is a two piece hybrid with an terribly similar name. Remember, the ONE means its a one piece. The other piece on the 2020 Voodoo One is the end cap which, as we stated above, is upgraded from the 2019 version to be a bit more durable and lighter.
