2020 Marucci Posey28 Pro Metal

Marucci has dialed in the 8 year old space. Although not cheap, the Posey28 Metal from Marucci is the best USSSA bat for 8 year olds. For an 8 year old we like the 28/18 best.

2020 Louisville Slugger Solo

Big barrel, light swing, great reviews. What is not to love about the 2020 Louisville Slugger Solo in a drop 11. At 8, generally, we'd go for the 28/17 or 29/18.

2018 Marucci F5

Although it does not come in a USA version, the best value bat for an 8 year old is the 2018 Marucci F5. Killer bat for a killer price. 28/18 or 27/17 is where more 8 year olds should be.

Update September 19: In August of 2019 we began testing most of the 2020 bats. That data collection process, while ongoing throughout the 2020 season, is now incorporated into the results you see here.

What’s The Right Bat Size?

After surveying over 200 parents of 8 year old players we found that the right bat size for an 8 year old is, on average, 28 inches and 18 ounces (28/18). The second most common is 29-inches and 19-ounces followed very closely by a 27/17. We suggest the right size bat for most 8U players to be a 28/18. The chart below shows the 8U market it in more detail.  (Click here for more details on the chart).

Bat Size Chart for 8 Year Old

Much like all the other ages we surveyed for the right bat size, we found that attributes like height, weight, strength and skill didn’t predict bat size for 8 year olds very well. In other words, bat fitting in the traditional height/weight chart seems otherwise pointless. Most hitters simply choose what everyone else in their age group has chosen. For the 8 year old bunch that coalesces around a 27 – 29-inch bat with a weight of 17 to 19-ounces. When in doubt, we suggest you go with the 27/17. If you’ve played before then go with a 28/18. We’d only recommend a 29/19 for those who really know what they are doing and have tried the bat out before.

Also, in the 8 year old wold, drop 11 and drop 12’s work well too. (Drops are the numerical difference between the length of the bat in inches and the weight of the bat in ounces. So, for example, a 28-inch drop 10 bat has a stated weight of 18-ounces). We mention a few of our favorite drop 11 and drop 12 bats below.

Bat Rumors…

Best Bat for 8 Year Old

For the smaller space most of the ‘rumors’ are no longer rumors. Most recently, Easton’s Maxum—which recreates the now defunct Combat Maxum—released in September of 2019. The bat serves the USSSA market only but comes in a monster drop 12 and drop 10 barrel in the 27, 28 and 29-inch. The 2 3/4 barrel bats look to make a splash. Although it is too early to put them in our best bat for 8 year old list, they might be the perfect bat for many.

Best Bat For 8 Year Old

When we consider the best bat for an 8 year old we first consider the right size of bat. Based on our survey data of over 3,000 respondents, an 8 year old favors a 28-inch bat and an 18-ounce bat more than any others. 29 and 27-inch follow in that order as do 19 and 17 ounce bats. Sizing constraints force our hand a bit as not every bat is available in a 28/18 and even less are available in a 27/17.

Far and away, the most popular USSSA bat in the 27, 28 and 29-inch drop 10 space is Marucci’s CAT 8. This bat was released in 2019 but still packs a punch as good as or better than any 2020 option. Although a single piece bat—and a bit more likely to ring the hands—we found pitch speeds slow enough in the 8 year old leagues that hand sting doesn’t matter that much. And the Cat 8’s well built barrel and knob technology to help dampen sting removes any issue anyways.

Although a great bat for an 8 year old, it doesn’t make the CAT 8 any less expensive. We think most parents looking for a reasonable choice in the 8u space find a $200+ price point, which we could find the CAT 8 for in droves at the time of this writing, too much to fork out. At best, most 8 year olds will be swinging the bat for a few months before they grow out of it. 9 Year olds tend to swing bats an inch or two bigger and a CAT 8 price, despite its lovliness, is a bit over the top. Fair enough.

If that sounds like you, because it sounds like us, then we think the Marucci F5 is a very reasonable suggestion. It has that same great, big CAT 8 type barrel but no tech in the knob. But, since pitch speeds aren’t very aggressive, hand sting really is not a problem. Throw in the fact the bat is more like $100 and now we are talking. The price point, big barrel and CAT 8 like performance is what makes the Marucci F5 our favorite bat for most 8 year olds.

The best 8 year old bat, according to our rating system, hitters, exit speeds and general industry feedback, is the Posey28 Metal. Do note, the Posey28 Metal is just the 2019 CAT 8. If you can find that one for cheaper then we say go for it—unless your son or daughter is dying for the Posey28 look. Either way, expect a big barrel, great swing, solid sound and big hit. We’ve yet to find anyone with a CAT 8 or Posey28 in the smaller USSSA space who does anything but love the Posey28/CAT 8.

  • Inexpensive, relatively speaking.
Reasons to Avoid
  • Hand Sting
  • Too Light Means Not As Much Power
  • Still Not Cheap

Let’s be serious, there are NOT a lot of good options in the USA bat space for 8 year olds. But, the 2020 Slugger Solo is the only bat in its 3rd year of production that has been loved every year. It was the most popular bat in the USA release year of 2018 because of its really good swing weight. Although they have not changed much since it still swings light and has a ton of reach and barrel for a light swing weight. We wish it was cheaper, but we wish every bat was cheaper.

Dollar for dollar you won’t do any better than the 2018 Marucci F5 for an 8 year old. Depending on the sale you find it hovers around the $100 mark. The bat feels a lot like the CAT 8/Posey28 but comes at a price point of less than half. Throw in the fact that an 8 year old won’t be 8 forever—this bat is likely just worthy of a few months of use before they grown out of it—and this is a perfect sized bat in a perfect price point. Granted, there are some cheaper models out there—which a lot of non-serious baseball players will do just fine with. But, if you are looking for the best bat for an 8 year old and looking for a deal then look no further than the Marucci F5.

Best Fastpitch Bat for 8 Year Old

Fastpitch SPECIFICATIONS | Drop: 13 | Bat Type: Hybrid | Barrel Type: Aluminum | Price: $$ | Swing Weight: Light | Rating: 4.5/5 | Models: wtdxbfp19 | Features: Hybrid is rare in Fastpitch, Ultra Light Drop 13

Reasons to Buy
  • Inexpensive
  • Super Light Swing
  • Two Piece Tech that almost never hurts the hands
  • Good sized barrel
Reasons to Avoid
  • Some Denting Reported on Fast Pitch Speeds
  • Still not “cheap” and they’ll grow out of it quick

For an 8 year old in fastpitch the focus should be on something light. DeMarini’s Bustos in a drop 13 is what you want—alkthough there are some other drop 13’s out there too worth your time (like Slugger’s Proven). The Bustos two piece design will help keep hand sting down too. Don’t expect the world from this bat—faster pitch speeds and a little bit older kids will dent it. But, for an 8 year old, we think it the perfect fastpitch bat. Of course, like always, we wish it was cheaper and we think, unless you’re real serious about fastpitch, then a less expensive box store type bat with a very light swing weight will do you better.

USA SPECIFICATIONS | Drop: 9 | Bat Type: Single Piece Aluminum | Barrel Type: Aluminum | Price: $ | Swing Weight: Balanced | Rating: 4/5 | Models: WTLUBVA18B9 | Features: Maximum Durability, Inexpensive

Reasons to Buy
  • Great Inexpensive Bat
  • Good Warranty
  • Easy to Find
    • Very Good Reviews and a Long History
Reasons to Avoid
  • Not a lot of Sizing Options
  • Lacks Top End Performance
  • No Hand Sting Dampening Ability

Although it only comes in a USA, the drop 9 Slugger Vapor should serve the needs of most 8 year olds looking for a cheap bat to get through the season. We would not concern ourselves with the USSSA or USA stamp at this age as its not so much about performance in the cheap space as it is having something to work with. The Slugger Vapor for an 8 year old looking for durability and a bat to take to games and warm up will be right at home. It is also available everywhere bats are sold–or so it feels like that. In fact, for most 8 year olds we don’t think spending more than $60 or so is the right approach–unless they are taking this very seriously—and there are plenty of 8 year olds who are.

Reasons to Buy
  • Huge Barrel
  • Great Sizing Options
  • Great Performance Feedback in any League
  • Anti Vibration Knob Really Does Work
Reasons to Avoid
  • Expensive
  • Not Changed That Much from the 2017 Model
  • There are bats with Lighter Swing Weights

If you can find a deal on a 2019 CAT 8 from Marucci in a drop 10 27, 28 or 29-inch length we’d go for it. It is, in fact, the same bat as the Posey28 Metal that we rank the highest on this list. But, since its a year removed, it will likely go on discount sooner than the Posey28. We like it for all the same reasons we’d like the Posey28. That is, its a big barrel, lights wing and comes in a 27 through 29-inch drop 10 which is the sweet spot for 8 year olds. The sting dampening in the hands makes up for its stiff feel. The CAT 8 sounds great and can really drill a ball if you can square it up. In 2019 it was our favorite bat for 8 year olds, but we just moved it down here because we like to keep our lists current.

It does not come in a USA version, sadly. To see those options check out our best USA Bat section.

Reasons to Buy
  • Fantastic User Reviews
  • Huge Barrel with Balanced Swing
  • Great Durability
  • Anti-Vibration Knob
Reasons to Avoid
  • Not Cheap
  • You Might Want a Composite Barrel
  • The CAT 6 Isn’t that Much Different, Likely Cheaper
  • No 2018 USA Versions
  • Could Not Find a 27-inch

Seriously though, we do not work for Marucci. But, when we consider all the bats from 2017 that come in a drop 10 or 11 with a 27, 28 and 29-inch length the CAT series floats to the top without question. For this particular one we almost chose the 518 Omaha from Slugger. It is also a single piece bat with a few options. But, in terms of overall player feedback and barrel size we think the CAT 7 is as good as they come. In fact, if you can find it at a discount (and at the time of this writing you could) then we’d suggest you go for it since it isn’t much different than the CAT 8 which is exacly like the Posey28 Metal which tops this list.

If we like the USSSA big barrel version of the Marucci F5 (we do, it was ranked #5) then we really like the JBB version of the bat made specifically for coach pitch type leagues. (You could also use it for an advanced tee ball type player too). The big barrel, light swing and very short sizing is fantastic and useful. Last we looked you could still find the white version of this bat in a 26-inch. If you can’t find it in the right size then you can go for the 2020 version of the Marucci F5 which is the same bat but with a black background instead.

In the spirit of changing things up (because the Marucci F5 is a great pitching machine bat for an 8 year old too) we really like Slugger’s Omaha for 2020 in a Junior Big Barrel version. The bat looks smooth too. Expect some great durability, good swing weight and a real popular look in the dugout. The bat performs quite well too, but we can’t expect much from most 8 year olds in the pitching machine world. In any event, we think you’ll like the Louisville Slugger Omaha drop 10 JBB bat for any 8 year old playing machine pitch. Sizing options range over that 27, 28 and 29-inch where most 8 year olds are.

Reasons to Avoid
  • USSSA Version not Durable
  • USSSA Version Illegal

This bat is illegal in most leagues. But, if you can find it in a 28/18 and are willing to spend a small fortune than expect to have one of the best USSSA bats ever. We don’t rank it higher on this list because they are very inaccessible—they runs upwards of a thousand dollars new in wrapper on secondary market stores. So, if you happen to play in a league that does not enforce bat rules then you’ll do as well with this 2017 CF Zen in a 2 3/4 as you would with a stick of dynamite. Remember, the 2017 version of the bat, once it was made illegal by USSSA, was retooled with an orange end cap. Although still a good bat, the orange end cap one isn’t nearly as good as the old illegal drop 10 2 3/4 2017 Zen. That bat is a straight legend—and priced accordingly.

How We Rate Bats

We hit every bat we rate. Most our hits come from real players that might very well use the bat in a game. Over the past 5 years we have swung every performance bat made from every serious manufacture. As well, track the exit speeds, measure the barrel sizes and collect reader feedback about bats. We don’t sell bats and we aren’t interested in doing so. We are an independent bat review site out to #spitonthehype as we like to say.
