After testing every baseball, slow pitch and fastpitch bat on the market we think the best home run derby bat is the Xeno drop 8 in fastpitch, the CAT 7 Connect or 718 Select in BBCOR, the drop 5 DeMarini CF Zen in USSSA and the Easton Beast X Hybrid in USA. Generally, for each bat, players loved the big barrels, end loaded feel and exit speeds. A stiffer shaft and heavier MOI lent itself to longer hits. Granted, the bats are harder to swing than their lighter counterparts, but those that are going for the long ball can make an impact with those bats.

We review the best slowpitch home run derby bats in their own section.

Our BBCOR Pick

Best Bat for Hitting Home Runs

Marucci’s Cat 7 Connect is a two piece hybrid built with the heavy hitting high school or college player in mind. The bat comes with a 10% end load (meaning it swing 10% heavier than a bat like the CAT 7). The barrel is the same as the CAT 7—which people love. And the connective piece makes for a good feel on both hits and mishits. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: Marucci CAT 7 Connect Review.

BBCOR Options

There are several great big hitting BBCOR bats on the market. We tended towards two piece, hybrid bats for their durability and ultra smooth feel. This includes the Marucci CAT 7 connect as well as the 718 Select. Both are end loaded sticks with a good sized barrel and a great feel on contact.

Serious collegiate players, who hit the long ball, tend to prefer single piece aluminum bats.

If you can swing one of those hard, then we like the idea of a bat like the 518 Omaha or the Easton Beast X Loaded.

Another BBCOR Pick

Best Home Run Derby Bat

The 718 Select, brought back by popular demand, is a BBCOR only bat with a massive end load. In fact, it swings as one of the heaviest BBCOR’s around (and the heaviest hybrid). The bat’s two piece connection (called the TRU3) makes for an ultra smooth feel and is the same as the 918 Prime. Throw in a Lizard Skin grip and a nice tapered knob feel and you’ve got yourself a winner. This is a favorite of several college level players. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: 2018 718 Select Review.

What Hits Further: Single Piece or Two Piece?

We discuss this at length elsewhere but, in short, single piece bats are more capable of transferring more power to the ball. This is just some basic physics: stiffer bats don’t give as much. And less give means more energy transferred to the ball.

Ironically, though, our list of best home run hitting bats tend to the hybrid (or two piece) bat. Our hitters tended to like the feel on mishits and hits. And, too, we like the end loaded feel of these hybrid bats built for big hitters. Those factors lend us to recommend hybrid bats for the best home run hitting bats.

That said, however, we really like some single piece aluminum heavier swinging bats too for hitting home runs. And, turns out, advanced collegiate hitters who love the long ball often prefer single piece bats over hybrids.

Our USSSA Home Run Pick

Best Home Run Derby Bat

We talk a lot about this bat in our best drop 5 baseball bat article. It is an absolute monster. Any who has hit with it, and can swing it, absolutely loves it. The price has come down a little bit since DeMarini released the 2019 version of the same bat. But this 2017 DeMarini Drop 5 is a beast. Way worth it if you can find it. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: 2017 DeMarini CF Zen Review.

Find the Right Size Bat

In theory, assuming we can keep the swing speed the same, the bat with the bigger size will hit the ball further. This should make pretty obvious sense. Bats with more mass can hit the ball further. In particular, bats with a greater swing weight (oft times referred to as mass moment of inertia) will hit the ball further. Assuming, of course, the bat speed is held constant.

Remember, though, that scale weight is not swing weight. Many make this mistake and assume the weight on a scale is how hard it is to swing the bat. In reality, though, how the weight is distributed along the length of the bat is more important than the actual total weight of the bat.

The biggest versions of the bats on this list:

  • Marucci CAT 7 Connect 34/31
  • Easton Beast X Loaded 34/31
  • DeMarini CF Zen Drop 5 32/27
  • Beast X Hybrid Drop 10 32/22
  • Slugger Xeno Drop 8 34/26

Our USA Pick

Best Bat for Hitting Home Runs

Easton’s Beast X Hybrid is an over-weighted drop 10 bat. Meaning, it should probably be rated as a drop 8. But, despite its mis-categorization, the bat is a bomb maker. Players who can swing this bat love it. We also really like the 718 Select in a drop 5 too. But, in terms of the best exit speeds we could generate the USA Beast X Hybrid is it. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: Easton Beast X Hybrid Review.

What is the Drop?

The drop of a bat is the numerical difference between the length of the bat in inches and the weight of the bat in ounces. For example, a 33-inch long bat that weighs 30 ounces is considered a drop 3.

BBCOR bats (those used in highschool and collage play) are requried to be at least a drop 3. Bats for younger players can have all types of drop ranges. Common ones are drop 12, 10, 8 and 5. Fast pitch bats are common at 12, 11, 10, 9 and 8.

Our Fastpitch Pick

Best Bat For Hitting Home Runs

Watch virtually any big hitting fastpitch player in college and they’ll be swinging the drop 8 Xeno. This is a monster bat with a nice end load, great feel and familiar sound. It swings about the heaviest of the swing weights with any bat we could measure. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: Slugger Xeno Drop 8 Review.

We have hit with every USSSA, USA and fastpitch bat over the course of several weeks among several different hitters. We think the average sized 12 year old should buy the 32/22 2019 CF Zen for USSSA, the 31/21 Easton Beast X Hybrid in USA, and a drop 10 LXT Hyper in a 31 inch. These three bats received the highest marks for exit speeds, barrel profile and player feedback in the space.

Bigger 12U hitters in USSSA space will like the drop 5 Easton Ghost X and the Marucci CAT 7 drop 8.

Our 12u Pick

Best Bat for 12 year Old

The average sized 12 year old should get this bat in biggest size possible. That is, the 32/22. If they are above average weight (95lbs) or a very well above average player, then see our power hitter’s option below. Although not cheap, we think this bat’s performance and feel is remarkable. Very CF8-ish. Price check: Amazon.com. See our full review: 2019 CF Zen Review.

What Size Bat for 12 Year Old

Our bat size chart shows the best sized bat for an 12 year old, who weighs an average of 95 pounds, is 21 to 22 ounces heavy. There are more than a few ways to get a 21/22 ounce bat in the youth bat space.

  • A 31 or 32-inch bat in a drop 10
  • A 32 inch in a drop 11
  • A 29 or 30 inch in a drop 8

Remember, though, there is a difference between scale weight and swing weight. Swing weight is how difficult it is to swing a bat. (See that conversation here).

As a general rule, longer bats tend to be more difficult to swing. Meaning, a 29/21 ounce bat is likely easier to swing than a 32/21. The shorter bat pushes the balance point closer to the hands and makes it easier to swing. This is not always the case, but common enough to expect it to be while purchasing.

The 2 problem with 12 year olds?

First, they grow, and sometimes quick. 95 pounds is the average but the range of weight might be as small as 70 pounds or as big as 125+ pounds. Follow our bat size chart and choose according to weight.

Second, their skill levels often vary dramatically. Maybe more so than any other age. That means those well above average hitters will benefit from adding an ounce or two. More novice hitters will benefit from less weight.

Here is where we would suggest sizing per player size and skill level at 12 years old.

USSSA 12u Average Size Bat Suggestions: Average Skill
  • 70 pounds: 29/19 CF Zen
  • 80 pounds: 30/20 Zen
  • 90 pounds: 31/21 Zen
  • 100 pounds: 32/22 Zen
  • 110 pounds: 30/22 CAT 7
  • 120 pounds: 31/23 CAT 7
  • 140+ pounds: 31/25 CAT 7
USSSA 12u Average Size Bat Suggestions: Adavanced Skill
  • 70 pounds: 30/20 CF Zen
  • 80 pounds: 31/21 Zen
  • 90 pounds: 32/22 Zen
  • 100 pounds: 31/23 Cat 7
  • 110 pounds: 32/24 Cat 7
  • 120 pounds: 30/25 Easton Ghost X
  • 140+ pounds: 31/26 Easton Ghost X

Adjust these numbers accordingly to the skill level of the player too. Note, as well, USA Bats do not come in as many sizes so you’ll likely need to be creative for much smaller or bigger kids than average.

Our Power Hitter 12U Pick

Best Bat Power Hitter 11U

The CAT 7 is a monster at the plate. But we also really like a shorter drop 5 Easton Ghost X for the real big 12 year old. How much to Spend on an 12Us Bat

12 years old is when a lot of baseball players start to take it serious. Our experience shows this is the age a lot of kids are willing to tell their parents they don’t like it enough and start specializing elsewhere. It is also the age a lot of other kids starting playing a lot of baseball.

For those who are real serious about baseball, the idea of spending a lot on a bat makes good sense. We like the idea of multiplying your age by the number of games you play and spending NO MORE than that. For example, a 12 year old playing 40 games this year shouldn’t spend any more than $480 on bats.

$480 could buy you any bat on any list.

Our 12u USA Pick

Best Bat for 12U

The 718 Select in a drop 10 or drop 8 is a great choice for the 12U USA Bat player. The two piece design and hot out of the wrapper feel are just what most players need at this age and in this category. Price check: Amazon.com. Our Full Review: 2018 USA 718 Select Review.

Wood Bat for 12U

We think every 12U player should have a wood bat in their bat. However, we do not think they should be using at the plate. Rarely will a wood bat give you the same bat dexterity, speed and performance as an aluminum or composite.

But, we do like the idea for strength training and batting practice. The smaller sweet spot on a wood bat forces players to be more selective with their pitches and find the good spot of the barrel more often. If you are looking for some ideas, start with our favorite youth wood bats.

Our experience with 12u baseball players is the vast majority of them prefer a composite barrel. These tend to have a bit more forgiving feel on hits and mishits. As well, the barrel profile of composites tend to be bigger and younger players prefer as much plate coverage as possible.

However, do note, aluminum barrels tend to do better in cold weather as well as cost less. If you’re going to go the aluminum barrel route, we suggest you look for a two piece (often called hybrid) aluminum barreled bat.

Our 12u Fastpitch Pick

Best 11U Bat

There have been no considerable changes to the premier fastpitch bat in at least a few years. And this is not a bad thing. The LXT Hyper is a brilliant bat with a great feel and a perfect balance. You can usually find decent deals on this bat especially as manufacuterers are looking to unload invenotry in time for the 2019 stock coming up shortly. Price check: Amazon.com. Our Full Review: 2017 Slugger LXT Hyper Review.

12u Fastpitch Recommendations

12u is a tough age to choose from for fastpitch players. Some girls here might start the year and end the year with completely different body types. But, we do like the LXT Hyper in the drop 10. If your daughter runs smaller, then consider the drop 11 in the same bat.

Thear a few really great 12u fastpitch bats. Slugger’s Xeno is a legit option as well as

After testing every baseball bat in the 2016 to 2019 class, we think the best bat for an 11 year old, who weighs up to 100 pounds, is the 2019 DeMarini CF Zen in a drop 10. Those restricted to the USA Bat standard will like the drop 10 CF Zen in USA Bat the most. Feedback we received showed that bigger, stronger 11u hitters (100+ pounds) should consider the Marucci CAT 7 in a drop 8. Those on a budget, or simply unwilling to spend that kind of money on a baseball bat, will like the retooled 2017 CF Zen (while supplies last).

In fastpitch, we’d recommend the 2017 LXT Hyper in a drop 11. The average sized 11 year old should try and find a 29/18.

What Size Bat for 11 Year Old

Our bat size chart shows the best sized bat for an 11 year old, who weighs an average of 80 pounds, is 30 inches long and 20 ounces heavy. Remember, scale weight is not swing weight so don’t be over zealous when reports come back about a bat weighing too much.

USSSA 11u Bat Suggestions

  • 60 pounds: 28/18 CF Zen
  • 70 pounds: 29/19 CF Zen
  • 80 pounds: 30/20 Zen
  • 90 pounds: 31/21 Zen

Our Power Hitter 11U Pick

Best Bat Power Hitter 11U

The CAT 7 is a monster at the plate. The heavier you can get with this one the better. More weight really adds to the value of this great feeling single piece aluminum. We’ve never seen a person use this bat who doesn’t flat out love it. The drop 8 is the idea single piece aluminum bat for the USSSA space. Price check: Amazon.com. Our Full Review: Marucci CAT 7 Review.

How much to Spend on an 11Us Bat

The answer, to some extent, depends on what you can afford. Never spend more than that as going into debt for a baseball or softball is a silly financial move.

Otherwise, we like to use the age x game rule for knowing the highest price we’d potentially pay. Simply, multiple the age of the player by the number of games they will play with the bat. For example, an 11 year old playing in 20 games this year shouldn’t spend more than $220 on a bat. That would take most on this list off the table. And that is a good thing.

Our 11u USA Pick

Best Bat for 11 Year Old

A serious baseball player in the 11u USA bat space will be happy with the USA CF Zen. The bat feels fantastic on both hits and mishits as well as delivers really good performance considering its a USA Bat. The balance is good too and it would be smart to push to a 31/21 or 32/22 if they are over 90 pounds. Price check: Amazon.com. Our Full Review: 2018 USA CF Zen Review.

Wood Bat for 11U

The excitement behind an 11 year old using a wood baseball bat is reasonable. Young kids, really starting to get into the sport, will love the idea of a wood bat. In the vast majority of cases, we think it makes sense to have one in their bat bag. Start, for example, with our favorite youth wood bats.

But, in reality, the performance of a wood bat (and its heavier swing weight) make any player struggle. Even when compared to a USA Bat, whose pop is restricted from the USSSA counterparts, the barrel profile, swing weight and durability (warranty) of an aluminum or composite bat make it the more reasonable option.

In other words, we don’t suggest a wood bat as the main game bat for any 11 year old player. But, have one in your bag for the occasional at bat and strength condition batting practice.

Our Value Pick

Best BAt 11 Year Old

In terms of a sweet deal, we can think of no other steal that quite matches the value of the 2017 DeMarini CF Zen Retooled. Companies are unloading their inventory on this bat and you can get it for a considerable discount. It does not get great online ratings, not because it isn’t a great performing bat, but because people who bought the original are still mad at DeMarini for fumbling around on the return process. Disregard those. The bat can rake and the current price we’d even say buy two. Price check: Amazon.com. Our Full Review: 2017 CF Zen Retooled Review.

Aluminum or Composite

Our experience with 11u baseball players is the vast majority of them prefer a composite barrel.

11u Fastpitch Recommendations

11u is a tough age to choose from for fastpitch players. Some girls here might start the year and end the year with completely different body types. But, we do like the LXT Hyper in the drop 11. We would not recommending up-sizing to the drop 10 until they are 12 or 13 at least.

Thear a few really great 11u fastpitch bats. Slugger’s Xeno is a legit option as well as DeMarini’s Slapper.

After over 4,000 swings of testing performance baseball bats we have decided on the bat most power hitters should choose. In BBCOR, we love Marucci’s CAT 7 Connect; USA Bat then we pick the Easton Beast X Hybrid; USSSA Big Barrel we would pick up the drop 5 CF Zen.

Why the CAT 7 Connect for a BBCOR Power Hitter?

Our BBCOR Pick

Best Bat for Power Hitter

One of our favorite BBCOR bat hits the Marucci CAT 7 Connect has a perfect end load with the seriously big hitting High School and collegiate player in mind.

We are in love with the Marucci CAT 7. And the CAT 8 looks promising too. But the CAT 7 connect is made specifically for big time hitters. It uses the same sweet singing barrel but also adds some weight in the end cap to make it a true end loaded swing.

The two piece design feels fantastic. Customer reviews on the bats have been nothing short of fantastic across the board. In fact, after scouring the interments, we can’t find a single bad review on the bat.

See what folks say:

Best Power Hitters Bat

As well, the swing weight of the BBCOR CAT 7, although not considered end loaded, is not as light as the two piece composite “balanced” bats in the BBCOR space. It runs about 5% heavier than the lightest swinging BBCOR bats. A heavier swing is what power hitters want.

Why the CF Zen Drop 5 for the Best USSSA Power Hitters Bat?

Our USSSA Pick

Best Power Hitters Bat

The drop 5 version of the 2019 CF Zen felt the best in our hitters hands, absolutely smoked baseballs and gets the best wide range of user ratings. If you do not struggle for bat speed, and play in a USSSA baseball speed, you will be a better hitter with this bat.

Although still early in the 2018 season, DeMarini released the CF Zen for 2019 due to some foreseeable banning problems with the 2018 version.

The drop 5 version of the CF Zen in 2019 is an absolute bomb maker. Hitter’s loved the feel on hits and mishits, the end loaded balance of the stick and the very large barrel.

Why the Easton Beast X Hybrid USA BAt for the Best USA Power Hitters Bat?

Our USA Bat Pick

Best Power Hitters' Bats

Although this bat should be categorized as a drop 8 instead of a drop 10 it absolutely rakes. We rate it as the best overall USA Bat too.

We consider the Easton Beast X Hybrid the best USA Bat on the market today. After hitting with it among several different players, measuring its exit speed and barrel size as well as reading online reviews we can’t get enough of this bat.

However, the only draw back (aside from the price) is the bat’s swing weight. It simply swings very heavy for a drop 10 and, we think, should be considered a drop 8 bat. That said, if you can swing it then you should be swinging it in USA baseball.

Best Power Hitter’s Bat Sources

Best Power Hitter's Bat

Some weeks ago, we wrote an article called the Best Bat For Home Runs. It differs in results with this article whose focus is more for the power hitter’s among us. But, no doubt, the two are very similar and both this Voodoo One and the Axe Avenge are big hitter’s dreams.

Used Bat Options for the Best Power Hitter

Our Used Bat Pick

Best Power Hitters Bat

If you would rather search the used market fora  big hitting BBCOR bat then we suggest the 2017 Easton Z-Core XL. This is a big hitting monster of a bat. Single piece and a good price are hard to pass up for the home run king. This bat is available only in BBCOR. Those in the USSSA bat space should find an old XL1 from Easton.

As we state in every best bat article we write, we make no over the top statements that the best bat on this list is the best bat for everyone. Indeed, we don’t even argue the bats above are the best power hitter’s bat for those in the power hitter’s space. Rather, our experience is that we, and many others, like these bats a lot in their defined space.

There are at least a few other used/older bats worth considering too.

Easton’s Z-Core XL is likely the most similar bat to the Voodoo One. It is also a single piece aluminum bat with an endload. The XL’s barrel is physically larger than the Voodoo One. It serves the same purpose as the Voodoo one and is a great fit for players in the Aluminum Log space. So, why not the top Spot? Simply because it does not come in a drop 10 Big Barrel like the Voodoo One.

We just can’t help but notice how perfectly adorable tiny baseball equipment is. Easton has made a t-ball bat that is 24 inches long and, get ready for this, a DROP 13.5! The bat weighs all of 10.5 ounces. It is the Easton Ghost X 24/10.5 tee ball bat. It is the lightest tee ball bat on the market today.

This image, even on mobile, is about as big as the actual bat. The smallest length of this bag weighs 10.5 ounces. This bat also comes with a USA Bat sticker you can put on.

How Light is 10.5 Ounces?

294 paperclips weigh 10.5 ounces.

For those having trouble getting a feel for how light 10.5 ounces is let me try and help paint a better picture. When our son JUST turned 3 the 24/10.5 ounces Tee Ball Bat was a bit too light for him.

Here is a video of him hitting an older version in a 24/11.

Age Recommendations for the Lightest T Ball Bat

Our size chart doesn’t even go this low. We recommend that a 4 year old use a 12 ounce bat.

But, as their parent, you’ll know where it fits best for them. If they are small for their age or you are looking to get a bat for a 3 year old then this 10.5 ounce bat will work well.

Note, too, a light bat might be the answer for a kid who is really struggling to hit the ball at all, regardless of what age they are.

Easton T-Ball Review

It is not, however, inexpensive. Most parents will balk at the $40+ price point. And we agree. At this age paying more than $20 or so dollars on a bat seems ridiculous. But, to each his own. And if you need a 10.5 ounce bat then you have virtually no other options.

We also really like the HERO tee ball bat form Axe bats. The oval knob gives kids a more natural feel. Although only a drop 11 the 24 inch is a real light swing. In part because of the oval knob that helps swing mechanics (We discuss that more here).

Lightest Tee Ball Bat Durability

Your number one concern about the lightest tee ball bat should be durability.

If you use the bat for tee ball only, with kids that should actually be swinging a 10.5 ounce bat (which are really small kids), then you will have no problem with durability.

On the other hand, if you use the bat for kid pitch or with bigger kids who swing harder, you can fully expect the bat to dent.

Light Tee Ball Bat Recommendations

We would recommend this bat for those hitters who: Are very tiny; Want a cool looking bat like their older brother or sister; want a bat that can be used in both serious and pretend games; want to increase their level of adorableness.

We would not recommend this bat for those hitters who: weigh more than 40 pounds; Would like a bat that can hit a ball further than 45 feet; Can think of something they’d rather have with $20 of birthday money.

The best place to purchase this bat (which is the 2015 version since the 2014 are hard to find anymore) is probably here.

To compliment our best USA Baseball bats article, we add this useful insight for the budget conscience buyer. After much testing, hitting and measuring we think the best cheap USA Bat on the market today is the Rawlings Prodigy. Our testers loved the barrel and the fact it is a drop 11 and  useful for most younger players.

Rawlings USA Bat Reviews

But, most of all, they loved the reasonable price for a bat that is not embarrassing—and believe us, we found plenty of embarrassing cheap USA bats. We think this sub $70 bat swings as well as a number of bats three times its price.

The Rawlings Machine bat is a Target exclusive bat and it is the only place we could find it for sale. As such, that also makes it the best place too.

The Easton S650 can be found in multiple places including Amazon and the Slugger 518 in a USABat is also ubiquitous.

Cheap vs Expensive USA Baseball Bat

Top 3 Cheap USA Bat Options

We consider the best cheap USA Baseball bats to be worthy of any serious rec player or, even, the BP or Cold weather bat of any serious travel player. Although these bats’ sweet spot and sting dampening may lack compared to bats on the top shelf of the space, we think every player will appreciate them in some at least some way. And each of their parents will appriciate them in terms of their price.

1. Rawlings Machine Drop 8

Best Cheap USA Baseball Bat

The Rawlings Machine is a drop 8 found at Target (which you can buy online and have shipped to you). We tested the machine up against bats 5 to 6 times its price and, despite some occasional hand ring on mishits, the bat received great feedback from every player that tried it. Rarely was the bat a player’s favorite, but it never found itself in the bottom 50% of individual rankings.

Do note that the bat swings a bit heavy and is appropriately categorized as a drop 8. Those looking for an ultra light swing will be disspointed they don’t make a Machine in their size. But, the added weight is useful to help remove some hand sting as well increase durability. And the 2 5/8 barrel is a good size compared to some of the other ridiculously undersized value bats in the USA Baseball space.

If you were looking for an inexpensive cold weather bat in the USAbat space or a legit BP bat then we recommend the Rawlings Machine which, last we checked, you can get for under $50.

2. Slugger 518 Omaha

Cheap USA BAts

Louisville Slugger makes a USA Bat in a more performance series of bat. This is a single piece aluminum bat with a drop 10 swing weight. The drop 10, you should know, is the numerical difference between the length of the bat in inches and the weight of the bat in ounces. Slugger’s 516 Omaha sits right under the $100 threshold.

Performance was not any different than the Rawlings Machine. However, we note emphatically, the Omaha does swing lighter. And a lighter bat almost always means more control and, ultimately, more contact.

We recommend the 518 Omaha as a value option for the true drop 10 player in the USA Baseball bat space. The main reason it sits behind the Rawlings Machine on this is that the Machine is half the price.

3. Easton S650

Best Cheap USA Baseball Bat

Easton’s S650 is another legit, albeit more expensive, 2 5/8 economy bat with a large barrel, decent swing weight and sub $100 price point. There are frills on this bat so don’t expect any special consideration for your hands on mishits or any ultra-light swing options. This is a drop 9 and swings really close to the Machine Rawlings above.

Last we looked this bat was $99 across the board. We find no reason to buy this bat if you can find the Machine at Target. But if, for whatever reason, you want a value purchase on an Easton USA Baseball bat then the S650 will treat you well.

4. Rawlings Prodigy

Rawlings USA Bat Reviews

The Rawlings Prodigy is another sub $100 bat. It is a poor man’s version of the 5150 (which is also pretty inexpensvie). We like the Prodigy for what it is: a straight forward single piece aluminum bat. We like the larger barrel and the light swing weight (drop 11). See our full Rawlings Prodigy USA drop 11 Review.

Cheap Bats To Avoid

Swings and Misses

2018 Easton Beast X USA Bat Review

The Rawlings VELO in a drop 10 or 11 this year, we believe, really missed the mark. Not only is the price point $100 more than it should be (these run at $199) but the bats seem small barreled and overweighted. The drop 10 should be a drop 8 and the drop 11 should be a drop 10. At $99 most should probably still pass on the Velo. But at closer to $200? Uh, no.

Don’t get us wrong, we think the VELO in the BBCOR and Big barrel are fantastic bats. they have been for years. And we fully expect Rawlings to get a better product for USA in the VELO come 2019. (As well, we really like the Rawlings Quatro in the performance USABat space). But, if there were any bat we were to avoid in the 2018 $200 USABat space, it would be the VELO.

2 1/4 Barrels

Best Cheap USA Baseball Bat

2 1/4 USA Baseball bats make zero sense and you should avoid buying them. Bat companies struggled to make good bats with 2 5/8 barrels (the USABat limit) within a certain weight class. To lower the swing weight, in the drop 12 categories especially, they removed volume from the barrel by making the barrel smaller.

This creates issues as smaller players really need a bat that swings light. And, turns out, there are no drop 12 bats in the space whose barrel is larger than a 2 1/4.

Despite that drawback, we would do everything we could to avoid a 2 1/4 barrel in the USA Baseball bat space. Consider dropping down an inch or two in a 2 5/8 518 Omaha, for example, before buying a 2 1/4 USABat.
